Most of us know Lance Bass as a pop icon from his *NSYNC days, but recently he’s been making headlines for something much more personal — his health. The 46-year-old singer revealed that he’s been living with diabetes and is now experimenting with stem cell therapies in hopes of improving his long-term outlook.
At first, Bass was told he had type 2 diabetes. But as time went on, doctors discovered his condition actually looks more like LADA — Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. Sometimes called “Type 1.5,” LADA starts out looking like type 2 but gradually acts more like type 1, requiring insulin much earlier.
Instead of letting the diagnosis slow him down, Bass has taken an active role in managing his health. According to People magazine, he’s got his diabetes “under control” but is also looking toward the future. That’s where stem cells come in. The idea is that regenerative medicine could one day reduce or even eliminate the need for daily insulin, though the science is still very new.
Bass is far from alone — millions of people around the world are hoping for better treatments, whether through stem cells, CRISPR-edited cells, or other cutting-edge research. But hearing a celebrity like Lance Bass share his journey helps shine a spotlight on the realities of living with diabetes and the exciting possibilities that may lie ahead.
