Diabetes at School: A Helpful Podcast for Parents and Caregivers

A school day involves a lot more than classroom lessons. There are lunches, sports, field trips, after-school activities, and unexpected changes in routine. For a student with diabetes, the right support can help them feel safe and fully included in all of it.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) explores this topic in an episode of its Diabetes Day by Day podcast called “Supporting Students With Diabetes at School.” Guest Crystal Woodward, the ADA’s vice president of legal advocacy, discusses the Safe at School® program, legal protections for K–12 students, and written care plans.

What should be in a school diabetes plan?

One useful distinction for families is the difference between a Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP) and a Section 504 Plan. The DMMP describes the child’s individual medical needs at school. A 504 Plan spells out the accommodations and support the school will provide so the student can safely take part in school life. Some students may have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), depending on their educational needs.

The details should fit the child. A written plan can address who is trained to help, how staff respond to high or low blood glucose, access to supplies, food, and water, and the support needed for sports and field trips. It gives families and school staff a shared reference point before a busy day or an urgent situation arises.
